Mindful Drinking and Moderation in Midlife: How to Drink Less, On Your Terms
**A Spotify 'Rising Star' show** Practical moderation for the way you want to live.
Why can't I drink like I used to? How do I drink less without quitting completely? Should I go for low, no or light alcohol drinks? Why do alcohol-free drinks cost so much?
If you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond and asking these questions, this is your podcast.
Welcome to the essential show for midlife adults who want to drink less, on their own terms—without the pressure to quit completely, follow rigid rules, or label themselves as sober.
I'm Denise Hamilton-Mace, your mindful drinking mentor, writer and public speaker on all things low, no and light. Each week, I help stressed parents and busy midlife adults navigate their relationship with alcohol through practical approaches grounded in real-world experience and behaviour change strategy, not willpower or wellness culture
What you'll get:
Mindful Moderation Solo Episodes – Deep-dives answering the questions that matter to sophisticated drinkers who want to moderate smartly:
- How do I cut back when my partner still drinks at home?
- What really works: willpower vs. strategy?
- Why do premium alcohol-free drinks cost the same as full-strength versions?
- How do I navigate social situations when I'm the only one moderating?
This podcast is for you if:
- You're looking for practical advice that fits your demanding life, not another wellness overhaul
- You recognise that coasting with mid-strength drinks, zebra-striping, or bookending your evening with something non-alcoholic are all valid strategies
- You want better mornings without giving up celebrating life's special moments
This isn't about going completely dry or reinventing yourself. It's about keeping energy for what matters most: family, health, career, and living life on your own terms.
Join the moderation revolution happening in midlife – because while Gen Z gets the headlines, you're the one actually doing it.

Hi , hi , lone Own Nation . So I've got a little PSA for you today , a public service announcement , and that is to let you know that there are going to be a couple of changes happening to the podcast in the coming weeks . Well , one big change , really . So , first of all , don't panic the interview episodes that I do are not going anywhere . I absolutely love speaking to brand founders and industry experts and bringing their stories to life and sharing them with all of Lono Nation . I think these founders are doing something wonderful .
Speaker 1As you know , I love Lono and light drinks and I want as many people to get as excited about them as I do . But I am going all in on this podcast for 2025 . I've had so much joy doing it , but I want to bring a little bit more to you . I've been looking at lots of different things that I want to do . My shiny object syndrome in my brain , more like a disorder the way it manifests for me is trying to get me to do lots of different things , but I really want to focus on this podcast and how it can help you . So , starting next week , I'm introducing a new series of podcast episodes called Low no Drinker FAQ , and this will be a series of solo episodes , so just me without a guest , and what I want to do is really tackle some of the questions that I'm getting in on a regular basis .
Speaker 1Now , this isn't one of those things where people say , you know , oh , I've been asked lots of times lately about , and you realize that no one's asked them anything . This is genuinely from the research I've been doing over the last few months and gathering feedback from people about the magazine , about the podcast , about what they're looking for , about what questions they have , about what they'd like to see in a book or what they'd like to see in a course , and all of those comments that you have very kindly and very helpfully shared with me have made me realize that , instead of trying to find ways to put this all together into some sort of big , fancy conglomerated thing , I've actually got this amazing platform with amazing listeners like you , who I can help instantly by just answering those questions . So it's going to be a series of questions , as I said , that you guys have put to me , and I really want to help you to understand and become confident about your decisions to drink less alcohol , whatever form that takes , and I'm going to do that by really tackling some of the fundamentals , so that you can understand the basics of these drinks and how they're made and what they can do for us , and what all the terminology means around them and where we find them and how we enjoy them All those sorts of things that come up time and time again . That might not seem like a big deal but actually do get in the way of you feeling confident and happy about your choices and able to go out and enjoy these amazing drinks .
Speaker 1So this series will be starting next week and it will run alongside the full length interview episodes . They'll be a lot shorter , so anywhere from sort of like 10 minutes to 20 minutes , not much longer than that . Each episode will focus just on one frequently asked question , so just one FAQ , and hopefully the answers will be practical and accessible and supportive and informative . I'll be looking at topics like what is ABV and what are RTDs and what is a unit , and what do I do after dry January and do I have to give up drinking forever ? All of these questions these are all things that you have said to me are playing on your mind , but and this is where you come in I would like more . I've got quite a lot to be getting on with to begin with , but I would love for you to share with me the burning topics that are stopping you from enjoying low , no or light drinks . Or maybe you've started enjoying them but you're not really sure about X , y or Z . There might be things that you just want to know more about because you're just curious . Whatever it is , I would love to get more of your questions in so that I can turn them into answers for you here on this show . So the easiest way for you to get your questions over to me is to reply to one of my newsletters . If you're not on the mailing list now , you can just go to the website lonodrinkermagazinecom . You can join the newsletter there , but I'd recommend you go to the free gifts page and download one of the freebies on there to help you live a life less intoxicated . Perhaps it might be the new citizens quick start guide , or it might be the start how to start your mindful drinking journey in three days mini course . These are all free gifts for you , so once you've downloaded one of those , you'll be added to the newsletter and then you can just hit reply to any of my messages and let me know what your questions are .
Speaker 1The other thing that I'd love to ask from you is your feedback on the episodes . I really want to know if this is the right thing for you , you know , is this the right direction for me to be taking the podcast in ? Do you want more like this ? Are you enjoying the solo episodes once they get started ? Do you think Denise just shut up and get on with interviewing your guests ? Whatever it is ? I really want to know so you can also hit me up on those email replies and give me your feedback on what you think of the idea or the concept , or wait until you've heard a few episodes and give me your feedback on the show itself .
Speaker 1I'm really excited for this , and I hope you will be too , and I hope that it's going to prove to be really helpful and supportive and , just like everything else that I do within Low no Drinker , it won't be about convincing you to give up alcohol for good .
Speaker 1It won't be about telling you that you have to go teetotal . I just want to arm you with the knowledge and the resources that help you make your own decisions so that you can live a life less intoxicated on your own terms , whatever that looks like for you and however long that lasts , whether you're doing a dry January or a sober October , you're just having a bit of a detox , or you're continuing to drink the way that you normally do , but you want to add in a few low , no and light drinks along the way as well . So , whatever it is , I hope that this new series of podcast episodes can really help support you in those decisions and that you enjoy listening to them as much as I'm going to enjoy making them . So I'll catch you next week with the very first Lono Drinker FAQ .
